It’s no secret: Pop princess Britney Spears’ pipes can hardly be compared to the powerhouse vocals possessed by other divas great enough to be known by simply one name; i.e.: Whitney, Mariah, Adele, Aretha, Celine. But how bad can a Grammy Award-winning singer actually sound — even without the help of auto-tune?
The answer is pretty darn bad!
An unreleased version of a 2013 Britney Spears tune is currently blowing up the Interwebs…and for all the wrong reasons. Audio of the “(You Drive Me) Crazy” songstress tackling the track “Alien,” sans post-production touch-ups, mysteriously made its way online this week. The unedited vocals are cringeworthy at worst, side-splitting at best and were promptly panned by the particularly critical Twitterverse.
Britney has found an ally in William Orbit, the man who produced the track. Orbit says that the version that appeared online has been taken out of context and was simply a recording of Britney getting warmed up. The mixmaster had this to offer in a Thursday morning Facebook post addressing the matter:
“I’d like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalisations in order to get warmed up. Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly. I’ve heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners.”
Orbit emphasized that the instantly infamous version that’s been floating around is not anything approaching a proper take, and added this in conclusion:
“Britney is and always will be beyond stellar! She is magnificent! And that’s that.”
