Lifetime’s Whitney Houston biopic has found its voice: Model/actress Yaya DaCosta has been cast as the late pop icon, Britain’s Daily Mail has learned.
The native New Yorker and Brown University graduate burst onto the fashion scene in 2005, appearing as a contestant on Cycle 3 of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model. Since then, Yaya has built an impressive acting portfolio. Her resume includes small screen roles on All My Children, Ugly Betty and House. DaCosta, 31, appeared alongside Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right and landed a supporting role in the critically-acclaimed drama The Butler.
The Whitney biopic will be Yaya’s first lead role.
Lifetime announced its plans to produce a Whitney Houston biopic last month. Angela Bassett — who co-starred with Houston in the 1995 box office hit Waiting to Exhale — will make her directorial debut in a film chronicling Houston rise to fame alongside her rocky romance with husband Bobby Brown.
I Will Always Love You: The Whitney Houston Story will premiere in 2015.
Any suggestions on who should play Bobby?
