The rest of us may only now be catching on to the fact that Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson is a few sandwiches short of a picnic, but scandal-scarred starlet Winona Ryder says she knew the Braveheart star was bonkers ages ago!
She remembers Gibson being “anti-Semitic and homophobic” long before his homicidal rants were broadcast in messages recorded by his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. In an interview with the Jan. 2011 issue of GQ Magazine, Winona recalls meeting Gibson at a party in the mid-1990s and being appalled at his use of hate speech.
“Fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk,” Ryder told GQ. “I was with my friend, who’s gay. [Gibson] made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me!” she said.
Summit Entertainment plans to release The Beaver, a Jodie Foster-directed film starring Gibson, nationwide on April 8, more than eight months after Mel’s leaked audio tirades promoted producers to shelf the feature.
