What Do You Think About the Torrent of Twitter Hate Surrounding Miss America Winner Nina Davuluri?
Miss New York Nina Davuluri is the new Miss America. The 24-year-old aspiring doctor from Syracuse is the first winner of Indian ancestry to earn the coveted crowning — and her appointment helped sparked a racial controversy across the Twitterverse.
Davuluri was repeatedly referred to as “The Arab” by some peeved Tweeters; others mentioned ties to terrorism and al-Qaeda. “This is America, not India,” someone remarked.
Nina was even branded “Miss 7-11″ on the website.
The Twitter negativity was so icy, in fact, that Buzzfeed collected a host of the offensive tweets for a makeshift compilation. In what was perhaps her first show of diplomacy as Miss America, Davuluri brushed of the social media hazing, telling reporters:
“I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
Davuluri, the second consecutive Miss New York to win the pageant, competed on a platform of “celebrating diversity through cultural competency.” Her performance of a Bollywood fusion dance helped seal the win.
Moments after her big win in Atlantic City on Sunday night, Nina told the Associated Press:
“I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
Davuluri plans to use her $50,000 scholarship winnings toward medical school.
