Walter Cronkite Deathly Ill Reports “Overstated”
A representative for Walter Cronkite is calling reports that the legendary broadcast journalist is deathly ill “overstated.”
Cronkite became a witness to history and a beloved news icon as the anchor of the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981. He would end each telecast with his signature line, “And that’s the way it is.”
Rumors that the 92-year-old is in failing health have been rampant for weeks, beginning after he cancelled a scheduled public appearance in May. His spokeswoman, however, has stated that Mr. Cronkite is simply recovering from a recent illness.
“The news reports that have gone out are overstated. He has suffered no major health crisis. He is at home. He was recently ill, and he’s home recuperating. He’s not gravely ill,” she told The New York Daily News on Saturday.
