Upset at Belmont Stakes: California Chrome Owner Livid Over Triple Crown Spoiler

Tonalist won the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Queen, New York on Saturday. The thoroughbred longshot galloped the familiar mile and a half long track, denying California Chrome at shot at becoming the first horse to win the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes) since 1978’s Affirmed.

The spoiler was a big disappointment for racing fans and enough to leave Steve Coburn — Chrome’s, usually jovial, working class owner — incensed.
