Be careful what you Tweet. It could cost you a pretty penny.
Katherine Heigl filed a 15-page, $6 million civil lawsuit against Big Apple drug store giant Duane Reed on Wednesday. The former Grey’s Anatomy star claims the brand tweeted and Facebooked a paparazzi photo of her near one of their establishments as she filmed scenes for a new television project.
And that’s a mayjah no-no.
Heigl, 35, argues that Duane Reed used the unauthorized image — which she does not own the rights to — as an advertisement on their social networking sites last month. The offending tweet read:
“Love a quick #DuaneReade run? Even @KatieHeigl can’t resist shopping #NYC’s favorite drugstore.”
It’s not about the money, according to Heigl’s attorney. It’s more the principle of the thing. That’s why all proceeds will go to The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, a charity established in honor of Heigl’s brother, who was killed in a car accident.
Heigl fell off the Hollywood radar after her Emmy-winning run on Grey’s ended in 2010. Well, unless you count that NyQuill commercial.
In the fall of 2013, The Hollywood Reporter set out on a mission to figure out what happened to one of the most promising actresses in Hollywood. What they discovered: Nobody in Tinseltown wants to work with her anymore.
The drug store has yet to comment on the lawsuit. Whose side are you on?
