Tom Cruise Scientology Video Gawker Legal Action Threat

January 16th, 2008 · No Comments · Tagged as Tom Cruise

The Church of Scientology is trying to bully Gawker into removing it’s video of kooky Tom Cruise’s taped rant on the joys of Scientology. Lawyers for the Church are threatening legal action against the blogging network for continuing to upload the Internet sensation despite receiving a Cease & Desist Letter asking for it’s prompt removal. Gawker, so far, has refused to comply with requests to remove Tom’s Scientology tape.

Gawker politely told the Scientologists and their legal team to go screw themselves in this response letter:

We are using this video in the context of news reporting and critical commentary, which are uses that may not be authorized by your client, but which serve the public interest. For this, and other reasons, we believe our use is fair. We further do not accept that we have broken any criminal laws in publishing it, and in any event, several of the statues you cite are inapplicable in this case.

We therefore believe that we are entirely within our rights to publish this video and as such we cannot comply with your removal request.
