This Just In: Madonna Doesn’t Approve of Lourdes Smoking

This may surprise you, but the Material Girl isn’t exactly pleased about her 15-year-old daughter chain-smoking like a character in an Eloise novella.

Madonna, 53, raises daughter Lourdes, 15, son Rocco, 11, and adopted son and daughter David and Mercy, both six. The pop icon says she was shocked by recent paparazzi photos of Lourdes sharing a cigarette with a group of pals on a Manhattan street corner.

It didn’t take long for the snaps to go viral and the ordeal has inspired the “Angel” songstress to take a “tougher” stance as a mom.

“Cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of, for anyone, I don’t approve of anyone smoking cigarettes, most of all my daughter,” she told NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams during a broadcast that aired on Wednesday.

When asked if she is a tough mother, Madonna replied:

“I think I am, but honestly I don’t think I’m as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. It’s hard though. Everyday is a negotiation, but cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of.”

What about that scene in the Too-Hot-for-YouTube “Girls Gone Wild” promo, in which Madonna is seen taking a drag on a cancer stick? Madge has an explanation for that:

“Yeah, I don’t smoke. That’s just an accessory…There’s a difference. She smoked that cigarette before I did that video, so she didn’t’ get that from me, OK?”
