The Time Barbara Walters “Shaded” Katy Perry
Keeping Barbara Walters waiting: Yeah, not exactly a bright idea.
In a new interview with Billboard magazine, Katy Perry recalls the time the TV veteran insulted her right before her appearance on Barbara’s 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011 special.
Perry informed everyone that she was running late, but Barbara showed up at the originally set time anyway. And that’s pretty much when the drah-mah started.
“When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! Yes, bitch!’”
Garland, 47, died of a drug overdose in 1969.
The interview fell right around the same time that Perry’s marriage to Russell Brand hit the skids. The singer now admits she wasn’t ready emotionally for such a high-profile appearance.
“I shouldn’t have done the interview: I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed.”
Still, Katy isn’t one to hold grudges. She tells Billboard:
“I think it’s the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me. I just couldn’t tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break.’”
Katy’s newest album, PRISM, is set to be released Oct. 22.
