Jordin Sparks stood up for virgins everywhere when the outspoken American Idol 6 winner blasted host Russell Brand for poking fun at the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings during last night’s 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings,” Jordin retorted as she took the stage to present an award at Sunday night’s ceremony. “It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut.”
Russell later apologized, if only half-heartedly:
“I didn’t meant to take it lightly,” he said of promise rings. “I don’t want to piss off teenage fans,” he said before adding, “Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody.”

Ms. Sparks needs to relax. First off, what she said is insulting to everyone who doesn’t need to broadcast their decision to wait until marriage. So, because my sister doesn’t wear a purity/promise ring, she’s a slut? lol
Most importantly, she’s a celebrity and so are they. If neither one can take the heat in the kitchen, they should go back to Disney Playhouse and stick to the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards lol Get over yourself Jordin Sparks. Lots of people aren’t sluts, and they don’t need a silly piece of metal to reassure themselves of that.

Go Jordin! As far as Mr. Brand’s comment on sex not hurting anyone, he should talk to anyone who’s had an unexpected pregnancy, or caught an STD, or had a marriage ruined b/c of extramarital sex. Teens who make the choice to wait until marriage are not only the smarter ones, they are the more mature ones. They will be enjoying happy, healthy marriages when many of their peers are long suffering the effects of pre-marital sex.

Good for Jordin. Russell Brand was completely out of line, and I’m very glad she had the “intestinal fortitude” to speak up. I’m sure she didn’t mean that practicing abstinence and being a slut are the only two choices. Consider the context - she was answering a lot of unfounded, unfunny attacks by a man who showed his bent toward promiscuity.

Please. Pre-marital sex is not the bane of all existence. Lots of people can have sex without getting pregnant or getting an STD, and getting married doesn’t suddenly protect you.
And just because someone doesn’t wear a promise ring or in fact does have pre-marital sex, doesn’t make them a “slut.” You can have pre-marital sex without having it with everyone. Honestly. Brand made a gross generalization with his comments, and so did Sparks. She’s no better than he is if she can’t differentiate between a “slut” and someone who has sex - the ultimate show of love - with someone that they love and care about, whether they’re married or not.

Tell that to Magic Johnson.
