“The Hangover II” Tough To Shake At Holiday Weekend Box Office
See anything good at the movies this weekend?
The Hangover Part II hauled in $86.5 million over the long Memorial Day weekend, according to Warner Bros. Studio estimates Sunday. Even abysmal reviews couldn’t stop The Wolfpack from ruling the holiday box office. The comedy sequel raked in $31.6 million during opening day showings on Thursday, setting a new opening day record for an R-rated comedy. It took in another $30 million on Friday, according early estimates.
Well-received animated sequel Kung Fu Panda Fu, featuring voiceovers by Jack Black and Angelina Jolie opened solidly with a $48 million over the weekend. It enjoyed strong reviews, but it fell far below the $60.2 million debut its saw with its first film three years ago.
It was a glorious weekend at the box office overall, says Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. From Friday to Sunday, Hollywood’s domestic take totaled approximately $220 million. Once Monday’s receipts are talled, Tinseltown should finish the four-day weekend with a bounty of $270 million, easily topping the $254.6 million Memorial Day record set in 2007.
