The folks at Best College Reviews have put out a list of the best college television shows of all time, and the top spot goes to “Undeclared”, a Judd Apatow production, that much like his other venture into television “Freaks and Geeks” was cancelled after just one fairly brilliant season.
It seems like kind of a weak list, but then when you review tv shows that have taken place on college campuses you quickly realize tv hasn’t gone to the college well that often. It’s hard to argue for many of the shows that were left out (Saved by the Bell: The College Years?) Possibly television execs are theorizing that the key demographic isn’t likely to be watching that much television, especially when you look at what a juggernaut CBS is catering to the elderly demo.
The top three shows are all legitimately great though, and the other four certainly had their moments, so I think at some point we might see a truly great series centered around a college. It’s been such a rich setting for movies that I’m hopeful.
