I have a compiled pretty muc all of the books mentioned. I love reading, and strangely enough, it's the disturbing stuff that gets me. For lighter realistic books, Ellen Hopkins has s ome pretty good stuff. Not above some of these novels at all, but still interesting. And there is a movie for "The Heart is Decietful Above All Things". I'm delighted to hear there's a book, and I will be reading it. An American Crime was a great movie, and it actually made my dad angry at me for suggesting it to him. Guess he can't handle anything without a happy ending. :)100 Years of Solitude, 1984, and Brave New World were books I read Senior year of highschool, and they were fantastic, but definetly not stomach turning.Another couple of novels that aren't "disturbing" but great reads that follow similar lines are "The Good Earth" and "Things Fall Apart".Everyone knows Classics are great. The Canterbury Tales have some interesting stories. i guess i'm not really the original list of psychological mind blowers, but eh. I'm just adding my two cents on what some good reads would be.

Just saying, I read through every comment. It is about a husband & wife team that kidnap, rape, torture, and kill their victims. They even sexually abuse his underage daughter from a previos marriage. The book is extremely graphic and detailed. Another disturbing couple to read about are the Barbie and Ken murderers. They also kidnapped young girls and she even drugged her teenaged baby sister to give to him as a gift, they both raped her, and she died because the drugs were too strong that her sis knocked her out with. The most terrifying thing to me is that both the females in the books above are now walking free. Sometimes truth is not only stranger than fiction but also more horrifying as well. I also agree with other commenters that A Child Called It was one of the most disturbing cases of child abuse.

The most disturbing true crime book I have ever read would be “Venom In The Blood”. The whole book is from the little girl's perspective. It comes across very true to life considering Tilly was sexually abused as a child herself. She has another book that is also disturbing but I can't think of the name of it. A lot of people think some of the stuff in the books is based on her own life which is so horrifying to think about. As far as flat out grotesque horror I say any Richard Laymon book. Some of the absolute most disturbing short story books I have read are the erotic horror series "Books of Blood". The only book I have started and couldn't finish was the Sleeping Beauty books that Ann Rice wrote under an alias. Those are not only depraved but also monotonous.

I have read several on the list and just wanted to through out a few more. “Gemma” by Meg Tilly is one of the most horrific books on sexual abuse of a child IMO and the audiobook is even more haunting because Tilly is the one reading it and she has a child like voice.
