Texas State Trooper Billy Spears has been forced into counseling after he posed for a photo with Snoop Dogg. Officer Spears was working at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin when the famed rapped asked if they could take a photo together. Snoop Dogg later posted the photo on Instagram and the trooper was reprimanded for his association with the famous rapper.
When Spears’ bosses found out about the photo, they forced him into counseling. The officer’s bosses cited Snoop Dogg’s criminal record and love of marijuana for the reason behind the punishment. Snoop Dogg’s big criminal record? The possession of marijuana.
A statement regarding the incident reads:
“While working a secondary employment job, Trooper Spears took a photo with a public figure who has a well-known criminal background including numerous drug charges. The public figure posted a photo on social media and it reflects poorly on the Agency.”
Spears says he wasn’t aware of any of Snoop Dogg’s drug convictions when the picture was taken.
Speaking to The Dallas Morning News, a Texas DPS said, “DPS does not typically discuss or release specifics of personnel issues unless they result in disciplinary action as outlined in Government Code 411.00755 and 411.0072. Supervisors counsel and coach employees on a regular basis, and these efforts do not constitute formal discipline by the department.”
Spears’ lawyer says his client is being singled out because he recently reported another officer for unprofessional conduct.
