Another day, another legal drama for MTV’s controversial docu-soap Teen Mom.
Jenelle Evans, who appears on the second season of the series, was arrested Sunday and charged with assault and “affray for fighting” after a video of her in the throes of a brawl with a romantic rival popped up on TMZ.com last month. It’s the second time in six months that a videotaped beating has sent a “Teen Mom” to the slammer. Amber Portwood, who starred on Season One of the show, is facing similar charges in her homestate of Indiana after beating burly beau Gary Shirley to a pulp as MTV cameras rolled back in September.
Evans was taken to Brunswick County Jail where she was booked and her mugshot was taken before she was released on bail. A warrant was issued for Evans’ arrest after police saw a video of the 19-year-old mother-of-one punching former friend Britany Truett as the two argued in the front yard of a home in North Carolina. Evans taunted Britany before pummeling her to the ground as friends cheered her on. The violent fistfight reportedly stemmed from Evans’ anger after her ex-boyfriend, Kieffer Delp, allegedly hit on Truett during a group hangout. Truett said the attack left her with scratches and bruises on her face, as well as a bite mark on her breast. Truett had claimed that she was not going to press charges, but changed her mind over the weekend leading to Evans’ arrest. Despite pressing charges, Truett was also arrested and charged with simple affray. A third teen, Brittany Nichole Maggard, who is seen pushing Evans into Truett in the video, is also facing one count of simple assault.
A lawyer for the star told TMZ: “Based on the information that I have received, I believe Janelle was set up.”
Jenelle’s explosive temper has already led to several run-ins with the law. She’s previously faced assault charges and a collar for breaking and entering. Evan was arrested last fall, along with Delp, on charges of drug possession and trespassing. That case is ongoing. Just last Wednesday, the troubled reality star appeared in a North Carolina courtregarding a different dispute in which she accused Delp of assault.
Evans became pregnant at age 16, welcoming son Jace with then-boyfriend Andrew Lewis nine months later. The MTV show documented Evans’ tumultuous life, which included a bitter and sometimes violent custody battle with her own mother Barbara, 57, over her child. She eventually voluntarily signed over custody of the 19-month-old. though she’s determined to regain full custody back:
“Once I get a job, save money and have my own place for three months, then I’ll bring my mom to court.”
Evans is due back in court on April 26.
