Talk about an image overhaul! No longer content to be the resident “Cutie” of country, Taylor Swift is dipping her well-manicured toes into the land of twerkin’, vintage rope chains and limber women that is pop music.
While critics might question when Swift has ever not been pop, the singer is expected to release her first, official LP in the popular music genre on Oct. 27. Dubbed 1989 — an ode to the year of Taylor’s birth — is flanked by the lead single “Shake It Off.” Taylor calls the effort a tongue-in-cheek nose-thumb at the rampant gossip that tends to surround Swifty’s always eventful love life.
“I’ve had to learn a pretty tough lesson in the last few years, people can say whatever they want about us at any time… false rumors. And we can not control that. The only thing we can control is our reaction to it.”
T-Swizzle says 1989 will present a unique blend of ’80s pop and the tabloid fodder that has followed her career. The Grammy winner spoke candidly to fans about it in a live Yahoo! stream on Monday:
“I was listening to a lot of late 80s pop because I really love the chances they were taking, I loved how bold it was and how ahead of its time it was. It apparently was a time of limitless potential. Bright colors, bold chances, rebellion and the idea of that was so inspiring to me…the idea of endless possiblilty was kind of the theme in the last year of my life.”
Keeping in line with the very ’80s theme, a Polaroid of Taylor will be used as the album cover. Of course, this change in musical direction isn’t without its head-shakers. Gregg Swedberg, program director for Minneapolis’ country station K102, doesn’t believe the format “will pay Taylor much attention this time.” He tells USA Today:
“I’m sure there will be some stations who will play it a couple of times, as she makes high-quality music no matter the genre. Taylor fans will love the new music, and it’s well known that her fans come from all formats. I hope she gets the country muse again soon and we’ll gladly welcome her back whenever that is.”
