Susan Boyle Makes Billboard History With No. 1 Debut

Move over, Madge. Back up, Beyonce. There’s a new pop queen reigning supreme on the charts, and her name is Susan Boyle.
The Scottish talent show contestant-turned-singing sensation sold over 700,000 copies of her debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, debuting at No. 1. That not only gives her the best first week sales of 2009, but also the best-selling album debut by a woman in the history of the Billboard SoundScan, a rep for Columbia Records said Wednesday.
Boyle, 47, became an instant star when she performed “I Dreamed A Dream” from the musical Les Miserables on Britain’s Got Talent last winter. Another former talent show contestant also topped the charts this week. For Your Entertainment, the debut album from American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert, came in at No. 3 on the album charts, selling 198,469 copies.
