Suicide Prevention Groups Protest “The Office” Halloween Hangman Scene
Gossip Girl isn’t the only TV show inflamming sensibilities this week. Some suicide prevention groups aren crying foul over a scene featured in a Halloween-themed episode of The Office, in which Steve Carell’s clueless character tries to scare young children by struggling in a hangman’s noose.

The Office Halloween episode last Thursday opened with the paper company hosting a haunted house for young children. Carell in character as socially-adept Michael Scott pops out with his depiction of a hanging.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and other mental health organizations are calling on NBC and other networks to quit making light of suicide, TV Guide reports. They worry that depiction of a method of suicide might encourage mentally ill people to take their own lives.
“We try not to be zealots about this,” said Robert Gebbia, the foundation’s executive director. “But this one … kind of crossed the line.”
