Stylist: “Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ Collection Underwhelming”
She’s arguably one of the most prolific pop singers to ever put vocals to wax — but Madonna’s knack for fashion design leaves much to be desired, says one celebrity stylist who stole a sneak peek at the Material Girl’s new juniors clothing line for Macy’s.
Material Girl by Madonna and Lourdes — co-designed by the star’s teen daughter Lourdes Leon — features Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen as the celebrity model and targets young girls with a line of funky separates inspired by Madge’s years as a fashion-forward pop star in the ’80s.
Of course, Material Girl isn’t winning rave reviews from everyone. Celebrity stylist and author of The Shopping Diet, Phillip Bloch, who initially predicted that the line would be commercially successful says he’s left feeling slightly “underwhelmed” by the designs.
“The name of the line is fantastic and I think it will sell,” says Bloch, who has styled Hollywood glitterati Halle Berry, Mariah Carey and Sandra Bullock. “There are some good pieces but it’s a bit one-note. She did not give us what we thought we were going to get when the line was announced.”
Bloch adds that the line, which is available at Macy’s this week, is cute casual wear, but does not have the appeal that is uniquely Madonna.
“I thought we would see versions of some of her older iconic looks,” Bloch explains. “I’m surprised Madonna’s collection is not more Madonna. It’s slightly reminiscent of her Desperately Seeking Susan years, but it is very middle of the road, which is interesting for someone who is known for constantly pushing the envelope.”
