A rousing celebration rocked the streets of Madrid Sunday as more than 300,000 people in the Spanish capital formed a sea of red and yellow to celebrate the nation’s first World Cup. Spain stole victory and a championship title this weekend after handing down crushing defeat in a match against the Netherlands.
Today’s win was also a triumph for what may be the world’s first octopus oracle. With a perfect prediction record, Paul The Octopus contended that Spain would win soccer’s most coveted for the first time in their history. The eight-legged “psychic,” who has become a World Cup sensation by correctly predicting the outcome of all six Germany games, very quickly put his money — or should we say tentacles — on Spain when quizzed for his thoughts on the outcome of today’s final matchup.
