Everyone’s favorite blue creatures, who stood just three apples tall and stylishly sported white trousers and matching caps, are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a movie deal. Columbia Pictures is working with Hollywood writers David Stem and David Weiss, who penned The Rugrats Movie, to produce a screenplay for a live-action Smurfs motion picture.

Grandpa, Briany, Grouchy, Lazy, all of the other Smurfs will be created using CGI technology, actual actors will portray humans in the feature.

No release date has been determined, but Columbia is hoping to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible:

“We are committed to it and hope to get moving on it as quickly as we can,” a spokesperson said Tuesday.
