Did you see anything good at the movies this weekend?
A giant green ogre’s final swan song has bested a chick flick and a topless Jake Gyllenhaal at the box office this Memorial Day Weekend.
Shrek 2, the first 3D sequel in the departing franchise, showed its staying power Sunday, hanging onto top spot at the North American box office for a second week, according to early figures from box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
The fourth Shrek film took in $43.3 million over the weekend, easily beatin out competition from new releases Sex And The City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which finished in second and third places respectively.
Despite horrid reviews, Sex 2, the second box office adventure following the love lives of the four Big Apple stylistas at the heart of the hugely popular HBO Original Series, earned $32.1 million. A figure that comes in far below the $56.8 million opening weekend of its predecessor two years ago.
Prince of Persia, the Disney movie adapted from a video game series, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Kingsley, took in $30.2 million.
