Shia LaBeouf Out of “Orphans” Broadway Debut Over Feud with Alec Baldwin?

The tweets keep coming this Thursday morning and it appears the paparazzi aren’t the only folks with a bone to pick with Emmy winner Alec Baldwin. Shia LaBeouf, Baldwin’s former would-be co-star in the upcoming Broadway musical Orphans, has released a torrent of emails from Dan in Real Life stunt coordinator and the Orphans fight director which seem to detail the young actor’s icy rift Alec.

Shia had been tipped to play Treat, a young orphaned thief who lives with his developmentally delayed younger brother Phillip and goes on to kidnap wealthy older man Harold (Baldwin). Treat and Phillip slowly realize that they may have found the father figure they have always wanted in Harold.

LaBeouf is pulling a page from The Book of Baldwin and fighting back via Twitter after it was announced on Wednesday that he will no longer be making his Broadway debut in the revival of Orphans due to “creative differences.” The outspoken A-lister decided to release personal emails from his ex Broadway co-stars and director to prove that wasn’t the case.

“Sorry things went down like they did…Christian and I are very impressed with your work ethic and respect for the craft. It must have been difficult for others in the room to be schooled by someone’s whose raw talent and enthusiasm outmatched theirs.”

This email was accompanied with a tweet that read:

“‘It’s no wonder truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense’ – Mark Twain’”

It was ultimately director Daniel Sullivan’s decision to pull Shia, calling LaBeouf and Baldwin “incompatible” in an email to the Transformers star.

“I’m too old for disagreeable situations. You’re one hell of a great actor. Alec is who he is. You are who you are. You two are incompatible. I should have known it. You tried to warn me. you said you were a different breed. I didn’t get it.”

Baldwin — who, like LaBeouf, is also known for being a bit temperamental — responded to his ex co-star with kindness and a bit of advice:

“It’s been awhile. And perhaps some of the particulars are different. But it comes down to the fact that what we all do now is critical. Perhaps especially for you. I don’t have an unkind word to say about you. You have my word.”

The 26-year-old actor responded, writing:

“Same. Be well. Good luck on the play. You’ll be great.”

Orphans originally premiered in Los Angeles in 1983. The first Broadway adaptation of the Lyle Kessler drama will begin performances March 19 and is set to open April 7 at Schoenfeld Theatre.
