Disney teen star Selena Gomez joins Joel Madden, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Angelina Jolie as the newest celebrity appointed an UNICEF ambassador. At 17, Selena is the youngest ambassador in the history of the organization.

The star of Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place spent much of the Labor Day Weekend in a poverty-stricken region of Ghana, working to bring local children clean water, nourishment, education, and access to healthcare. “I’m so honored to be apart of UNICEF! I can’t wait to help out more, it was truly a life changing adventure! Posting more info for you all!” Selena wrote in a post of her Twitter page Monday.

As an ambassador, Selena will help educate and advocate on behalf of UNICEF and support the organization’s mission to help reduce the number of daily preventable deaths of children.

“Every day 25,000 children die from preventable causes. I stand with UNICEF in the belief that we can change that number from 25,000 to zero,” Selena said in a statement last week. “I know we can achieve this because every moment, UNICEF is on the ground providing children with the lifesaving assistance needed to ensure zero becomes a reality.”
