Sad news to report this morning, guys. Sam the Koala Bear has died.

Sam won the hearts of thousands around the globe after video footage of her rescue from Australia’s deadly wildfires hit the interwebs six months ago. An image of Sam being fed water by a firefighter was published worldwide. She was later taken to the Mountain Ash Wildlife Center in Rawson, Australia, where she was treated for burns.

The adorable creature died on August 5 while undergoing surgery to treat a life-threatening illness, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
