Isn’t she lovely? Sadie (AKA Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot), a Scottish Terrier who swept the dog show circuit for much of 2009, took home the trophy for Best in Show during the final day of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on Tuesday night. The Little Lady joined the winner’s circle ring at America’s top dog show with her handler Gabriel Rangel.
Moment before judge Elliott Weiss crowned 4-year-old Sadie, a pair of PETA protesters walked into the big ring at Madison Square Garden and held signs over their heads that said “Mutts Rule” and “Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs’ Chances.” The animal rights group is a harsh critic of the show, which is for 2,500 purebred dogs. The crowd of 15,000 booed the women, Dana Sylvester and Hope Round, who were charged with criminal trespass, NYPD officials said.
