Indio Downey, son of actor Robert Downey Jr., is facing criminal drug charges after being arrested for possession of cocaine in West Hollywood over the weekend.
Downey, 20, was arrested during a traffic stop near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Cienega on Sunday afternoon. Police made the stop after they noticed the young man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, “smoking something out of a pipe.” Indio posted $10,000 bail and was released just after 12:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Robert Downey Jr. famously struggled with drug addiction for much of his early career. The Iron Man star even did a stint in prison before completing a court-ordered substance abuse treatment program in 2002. The result was a career comeback often lauded as the most successful in Hollywood history.
According to a statement issued Monday afternoon, the actor is determined to help his son down the same road to sobriety.
“Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
