R. Kelly finally broke his silence on reports that his daughter is transgender and in the process of becoming male. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s actually saying anything.
Jaya Kelly — the youngest of the R&B legend’s two daughters with reality star Drea Kelly — came out as transgender earlier this month. Jaya, who has adopted the moniker Jay, revealed that he is transitioning from female to male, a la Chaz Bono.
“I believe I am a boy and want surgery and the medication to help me be who I was supposed to be.”
Jay, 14, has identified as male since age six, but revealed his transition publicly in a series of postings to social media. Drea, one of the stars of the VH1 docu-series Hollywood Exes, has been overwhelmingly supportive of her son’s transition. But the “Honey Love” crooner has been mum on the subject.
During a recent interview with Chicago’s WCGI, the Windy City native was asked to address the “report of [his] daughter becoming [his] son.” Kelly coyly deflected the question by stating that while he’s supportive of his children, one should only “believe what you see with your own eyes.”
“You don’t really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming my son. Don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit. You know what I’m saying? Real talk. Always believe what you see with your own eyes. That’s the best way to go about this business…You save money so your kids can go to college — no matter what they are or who they are. They’re still your kids; you gotta support them.”
