PSY’s gotta be psyched!

The South Korean rapper’s hit single, “Gangnam Style,” has become the first YouTube video to surpass one billion views. The official promo has hit the milestone just five months after it became one of the signature songs of summer. Just this week, “Gangnam Style” was also named the top trending YouTube video of 2012.

“PSY’s success is a great testament to the universal appeal of catchy music– and er, great equine dance moves,” YouTube said in a statement Friday. ” In the past, music distribution was mostly regional. It was more difficult to learn about great artists from around the world. But with a global platform at their fingertips, people are now discovering and sharing amazing music from all over the planet, by artists like Brazilian Michel Teló and Belgian-Australian Gotye.”

The song has taken the globe by storm and spawned many parodies. Other stars have even latched onto the popularity of the dance; Madonna invited PSY to perform with her at Madison Square Garden. And there was a dance-off between Psy and ’90s hip-hopster MC Hammer at last month’s American Music Awards.

Perhaps not surprisingly, PSY is putting his new-found fame to good use. After reportedly pocketing nearly $8 million off the success of “Gangnam Style,” the star recently plopped down $1.5 million cash on a ritzy condo just outside Beverly Hills.
