The third time was most certainly not the charm for the latest installment of Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables franchise. The Expendables 3 found itself out-gunned by the critically-panned but commercially-successful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; which opened No. 1 for the second weekend in a row.
The Expendables trilogy, which featured the starpower of Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Kelsey Grammer and Antonio Banderas, pulled in a paltry $16.2 million. By comparison, the first installment in the Expendables franchise enjoyed a $34.8 million opening weekend in 2010.
The second debuted to $28.6 million in 2012. Industry experts are debating whether or not piracy is to blame for the theatrical flop. A leaked copy of the film hit the internet three weeks before it arrived in theaters and was viewed by an estimated two million people.
