“The Phantom Of The Opera” Sequel “Phantom: Love Never Dies”
Andrew Lloyd Webber will unveil a sequel to the world’s most successful musical at the end of 2009, the famed compooser told the Times of London on Sunday.
Phantom: Love Never Dies will launch with a historic simultaneous opening in three cities – on New York’s Broadway, in London’s West End, and maybe even Shanghai.
“I don’t think you could do this if it wasn’t the sequel to Phantom,” Lloyd Webber told the paper. “We’ve been into the feasibility of rehearsing three companies at once and opening very fast in the three territories. The one which really interests me [in the Far East] would be China … I think to open ‘Love Never Dies’ in Shanghai would be an enormous thing.”
The Phantom of the Opera, based on a French novel by Gaston Leroux, is the longest-running Broadway show in history.
The follow-up to the 1986 Tony Award-winning production will take place a decade after the original, and unlike the original, instead of the French opera, the new story will take place on Brooklyn’s Coney Island.
“It was the place. Even Freud went because it was so extraordinary … people who were freaks and oddities were drawn towards it because it was a place where they could be themselves.”

The Phantom of the Opera is by far my favorite musical of all time! I loved the movie almost as much as the stage performance which I seen twice in Toronto at the Pantages Theatre and once in Buffalo when it came to Shea’s. I am excited to see that Andrew Lloyd Webber in back at it again to continue the story of this masterpiece! I wish him and the new show all of the best success – can’t wait to see Phantom on stage again! Guess it’s time to plan a trip to NYC and who knows perhaps one day soon in a theater near you…

I have to say that I have a horrible feeling about this. “The Phantom of the Opera” is by far my favorite musical, as well as my favorite movie. I love it to death, but I feel that a sequel – particularly the one it seems we will be getting – would only serve to take away from the beauty of the original. I don’t think I’ll be seeing this one.

I have loved this classic story since I was eight years old and am appalled to hear of ALW making a sequel. Why are all the great love stories ruined?!! Just like Gone With The Wind, Phantom is taking a turn in the wrong direction. I cannot believe that there is going to be a continuation of this timeless story. I am a firm believer that some stories should not have sequels, they should be left alone. This is one of them. I love ALW and think he is so talented but am very disappointed in him for doing such a thing with his beloved musical. :-( I’m thinking two thumbs DOWN.
