Peter Facinelli Files for the Divorce Jennie Garth Tried So Hard to Avoid

On Wednesday, actor Peter Facinelli officially filed for divorce from his wife of 11 years, Jennie Garth. This just as the actress opened up about her failed attempts to save the ill-fated union.

The estranged couple released a joint statement earlier this month, announcing the split:

“While we have decided to end our marriage, we both share the same deep love and devotion to our children. We remain dedicated to raising our beautiful daughters together. We ask for privacy and respect during this time.”

Although the divorce papers were filed just this week, the actor states the date of separation as January 1, 2012. Peter, best known for his roles in Nurse Jackie and The Twilight Saga, went on to cite “irreconcilable differences” for the split.

In the papers, Facinelli expressed a desire to share joint physical and legal custody of the couple’s three daughters — Luca, 14, Lola, 9, and Fiona, 5.

Peter and Jennie first met on the set of TV movie An Unfinished Affair in 1996 and married five years later. In an interview with People magazine that hit newsstands Wednesday, Jennie opened up about the split, which Peter initiated last fall, admitting that it has taken her a while to “come to peace with it.”

The What I Like About You actress, 39, says the constant separations between she and Peter, who was away filming in Vancouver and New York, were particularly hard on their marriage.

“I was very resistant. I didn’t want it to happen. It took me some time to come to peace with it. He would do everything he could to fly back every weekend. But it took a real toll on our marriage.”

Garth feels she has now gone through her “darkest” times and is looking ahead to the future.

“I’ve gone through my darkest parts and I’m coming out of it. I’m OK. I don’t know what the future holds, but then I’ve never been a planner. And maybe that’s a good thing.”

She added:

“While we have decided to end our marriage, we both share the same deep love and devotion to our children. We remain dedicated to raising our beautiful daughters together. We ask for privacy and respect during this time.”

Jennie will soon be seen in Jennie Garth: A Little Bit Country, a docu-series following her move with her daughters to a rural California community outside Los Angeles.
