My son is 2.5 months old. He smiles at us and laugh occasionally. Even when he was only a couple weeks old, he would smile (reflexive). We have many pictures of these “gas smiles.” However, he has been smiling in response to a rattle/sticking out our tongues since week 6-7. I’ve heard a lot of babies can smile around 5 weeks. I believe that it could have been a smile as a result of a reflex (what most call gas). It’s hard to get them on camera, but they do happen.

Babies who smile before the age of 3 months aren’t actually smiling…it’s usually gas…not in the case of my soon to be 1 year old son though…he was bright eyed and bushy tailed and smiling from the start. So I guess there are exceptions to the rule…and these beautiful children happen to be those rule breakers…

Omg!! Get over it already. Babies DO smile (even if involuntary). Leave them alone and let them enjoy the moment.

My daughter was born 2 months early, and I have pictures of her smiling at 3 days old… With her eyes open. The muscles are functional even if the babies don’t mean for it to be a smile, and they DO smile in their sleep… all the time.
