Paula Abdul is denying a report featured in the June 2009 issue of Ladies Home Journal, in which the American Idol judge seems to admit that she battled a 12-year addiction to painkillers and checked into a scenic rehab facility for treatment last fall.

“I could have killed myself… Withdrawal – it’s the worst thing,” Paula confesses in the story. “I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”

Not so, Paula said in an interview with Detriot’s WKQI’s Mojo in the Morning on Thursday. “It was very stressful for me to hear that and to be quoted saying something I never said. “I’ve never checked into a rehab clinic. I’ve never been addicted or abused drugs, and I’ve never been addicted or abused alcohol. I’ve never even been drunk in my life.”

The ’80s-era pop star also denied that she confessed to checking into La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. to finally free herself of her dependence on pain pills.

“It’s a spa,” Paula scoffs. “I was there for almost three days having fun doing spa stuff. It’s not a clinic. It’s not a detox place. It’s a luxurious spa. It’s like taking a mini vacation. I just wanted to chill out and get messages and maybe a manicure and pedicure.”

A rep for Meredith Corporation – publisher of Ladies Home Journal – told the NY Daily News the magazine is sticking by the story, written by reporter Peter McQuaid.

“We definitely stand by out reporting. We’re happy that she shared her journey with us,” said Mariella Azcuy, a publicist for the magazine.
