Skye McCole Bartusiak, the child star who had the misfortune of working with a pre-meltdown Mel Gibson in the 2000 hit The Patriot, died last week. She was just 21.
Her first role came in 1999’s The Cider House Rules. After landing the role of Mel’s youngest daughter in The Patriot, she went on to make appearances on the small screen, including roles in 24, House M.D. and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Skye’s boyfriend found her dead at her home in Texas on Friday. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. The McCole Bartusiak family, who live in the adjoining home, say the young actress suffered from epilepsy and had recently been plagued by a series of violent seizures. Helen McCole Bartusiak, Skye’s mom, believes she may have choked to death during a epileptic episode.
