Oprah TV Movie: Kitty Kelley Oprah Biopic Premiering Next Year

Just call it Oprah: The Unauthorized Story!
Television movie producer Larry A. Thompson has purchased the film rights to Kitty Kelley’s most recent bestselling unauthorized tome: Oprah: A Biography.
The book, filled with tales of Oprah’s humble beginnings, promiscious teen years, unknown paternity, hit shelves with a thud earlier this year and Thompson hopes to turn the scandalous tale into a TV movie or miniseries to coincide with O’s departure from her historic daytime talk show in Sept. 2011.
“…I think it’s a fabulous story, and it’s certainly a challange, but Kitty Kelley’s extensively researched book offers us the factual foundation to frame our cinematic portrait of this powerful and beloved icon. Oprah Winfrey is a very powerful woman, and that’s also something that will make our movie great,” Thompson — who helped bring biopics on Sonny and Cher and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz to the small screen — told E! News Monday.
“Few Hollywood filmmakers are as experienced as [movie maker] Larry Thompson at understanding and dramatically exploring the emotional complexities of famous people. … That’s why I was pleased that he chose my book upon which to base his movie. Compelling biographies of great people must separate myth from fact and hype from truth,” exclaimed Kitty, who looks more like one of the matronly figures you’d spot working at a church bake sale than a gossip queen and an aficionado of tell-all dish.
She has good reason to beam: Kitty reportedly inked a six-figure deal with Thompson for the TV movie rights to her Oprah book.
Thompson is leaning towards casting an unknown actress to play the Big Cheese: “Oprah Winfrey is one of the most famous faces on the planet, and if you have an actress people know, it may make it more difficult to get into the character as the face may block the icon.”
Who should play Oprah!? We nominate two-time Oscar nominated Viola Davis. Or how about Debra Wilson. Her spot-on O impersonations were always so zany on MADtv!
