Obama Dog Shortlist: Labradoodle Or Portuguese Water Dog

(Labradoodle, Left; Portuguese Water Dog, Right)
President-Elect Barack Obama says he and his family are thisclose to deciding what type of dog will get to join them when they move into The White House next week.
In an interview with ABC This Week’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, Obama revealed that daughters Sasha and Malia have shortened the list of possible choices down to two breeds.
“They seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound. So we’re now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up.”
Barack Obama will be sworn in as the nation’s 44th president on Jan. 20.

Without question the PWD or portie for short! i have 2 of them, had 1 before. they are by far the smartest, funniest clowns you will ever own! they are easy to train, love to run and can be very laid back depending on how you train them. mine dont get exercised that much and they lay around like uhm DOGS.

labradoodle? really? did not know labradoodles were hypoallergenic, but thinking about it, with the poodle mix, they very well could be fine. I came across an OK site that provides some background info: http://obamadogadoption.com/

Portuguese Water Dogs are just beautiful dogs. There is one called Cutty on a sailor’s blog. Take a look at http://www.westsailor.com where you can see Cutty living onboard a yacht. Incredible dog and really interesting lifestyle.

In a choice between these two types of dog (labradoodle is not a breed), definitely a Portuguese Water Dog! If Obama wants a crossbred dog, He would be better off getting a dog from a shelter rather than a so-called ‘Labradoodle’. As for labradoodles being ‘hypoallergenic’ – no dog is hypoallergenic, though there are some that people may be less allergic to. Some Labradoodles may have a non shedding coat, but just as many have a shedding coat or a combination of the two (awful to care for). Remember that they are labrador crosses, not just poodle crosses! I am sure the Obamas will be making a considered decision though and talking to the right people.

The Portuguese water dog is an amazing breed. They are smart and active dog who love all activites from agility to long walks. The Portuguese waterdog can also lay in the coch with their family. And they also LOVE children and sometimes take care of them like ther owns pups. I own one and train it in many things like agility, search people and obediance.

They need to get a porty.. I have a 10 year old porty named Misty… shes the best and most beautiful dog in the world(she’s a wavy.. they look better)… I haven’t seen a single hair shed from her in this entire time.. and despite what people are saying… they don’t need to be in the water or realy active… my dog actually doesn’t even like the water that much.. and we live in Northern Ontario Canada… so she doesn’t get walked that much.. and she has no problem with that… when I went home for xmas break since Id been watching the dog whisperer.. i tought her how to walk on a treadmill.. not so much as tought… but put her on it.. and she started walking… no problems whatsoever… so obviously… very smart…. misty is the most peaceful dog in the world and she loves anyone….. not really loves… but it seems like shes half cat half dog… she doesn’t really give much of a **** about anyone… in other words… she wont bug you ever…. shes the most ‘chill’ dog in the world… When I saw Obama give his acceptance speech and talk about geting a dog… the first thing that came to mind was…. “FoO! You need to get a porty!’. and he will… and he should…

The Portuguese Waterdog will be the best pick, it,s one of the best if not the best breed for allergi. Labradoodle is a mix and their genes goes back to Portuguese waterdogs,so why go for a wannabe when you can have the real breed that suits for allergi. When you first get a Portuguese Waterdog you want more of them.

These Labradoodles are not pure breds….I am a groomer we get all different sizes and hair types. Most shed something awful. We hate grooming them because the so called breeders tell the new owners they do not have to brush them because they don’t mat. I have not run into one that has not had tons of mats and they are biters because the owners will not let us shave them and let them start brushing them as the hair comes back. Stick to the porty they are wonderful.
