American Idol hopeful Nick Mitchell left the judges laughing and nearly speechless with his over-the-top performance of the song that won Jennifer Hudson an Academy Award.

Nick came on stage to perform “And I Am Telling You…” in costume as flamboyant alter ego “Norman Gentle.”

Sharp-tongued critic Simon Cowell called the performance both “atrocious” and “horrific.”

“Look, I hope I’m speaking on behalf of America here, where I pray you do not go through to the next round. It was arguably one of the most atrocious performances we’ve ever had at this stage of the competition. What it really is sort of horrific comedy.”
