Annie’s getting a facelift and a new life on the silver screen.
We’re getting our first look at a musical remake of the comic and theater classic. The new Annie stars Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role, Jamie Foxx as Will Stacks (a modern day Daddy Warbucks) and Cameron Diaz as the mean-sprited Miss Hannigan, a role made famous by Carol Burnett.
Wallis, 10, is the youngest Best Actress nominee in Oscar history. The celebutot was critically hailed for her work in 2012’s Beasts of the Southern Wild.
She replaces Willow Smith, who was tapped for the Will Puck-directed, Emma Thompson-penned vehicle before dropping out of the role. It was Willow’s famous dad, Will Smith, who first toyed with the idea of remaking the 1982 film about a young girl who sings her way through life in a New York orphanage during the Great Depression.
Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z contributed music for the film. As hardcore hip-hop heads may recall, Hov created a hip-hop version of Annie’s “Hard Knock Life” for his 1998 Hard Knock Life LP.
Annie: The Musical enjoyed a recent revival on Broadway. The original show won a Best Musical Tony Award back in 1977.
Annie will arrive in theaters just in time for Christmas 2014.
