NeNe Leakes “Thankful to be Alive” After Blood Clot Scare

Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes had a close call this week after doctors discovered several blood clots in her lungs.

Today the Southern socialite is speaking out. She posted a statement on her official website, telling fans she is thankful to be alive after what started out as a routine checkup ended with a stay in the hospital.

“Late last week I wasn’t feeling well and was feeling a little short of breath. I know my body and I know when I should be concerned so I went to the hospital to get checked out. After some routine tests I was diagnosed with blood clots in my lung.”

Leakes — who saw her breakout acting role on NBC’s The New Normal axed earlier this year — believes the “constant traveling” between Los Angeles, where the show was filmed, and her homebase in Georgia likely contributed to the clotting.

“I’m told this happened to me because of the constant traveling around the country that I do for my job. I’m thankful to be alive as the doctor advised me that most people don’t recognize the symptoms of blood clots and don’t go to the doctor and that’s when the big problems start happening.”

She added:

“Contrary to published reports I did not have a heart attack.”
