Just call her the People’s Princess! Actress Naomi Watts has been cast as Princess Diana in Caught in Flight — a biopic following the beloved royal’s last two years life.
The movie is believed to be the first feature film about the Princess of Wales, whose death in a paparazzi-influenced Paris car crash in 1997 has been chronicled in several U.S. television movies.
Director Oliver Hirschbiegel is scheduled to start shooting Caught in Flight in England this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. is confident the British-born, Australian-raised Watts will be able to capture “the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”
In a statement Thursday, Naomi said:
“It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role — Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
Naomi, 43, is also preparing to play another blond icon — Marilyn Monroe. The starlet has reportedly been cast as the legendary bombshell in Blonde, based on the book by Joyce Carol Oates.
Caught in Flight is one of three British films about the English princess that will be produced in the next year. Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson have reportedly been linked to another biopic, Diana. Charlize Theron is being courted to play Princess Diana in a film adaptation of Ken Wharfe’s book, Diana: Closely Guarded Secret.
