After years of delays, the story of the “World’s Most Dangerous Group” is inching closer to the box office. Universal Pictures has announced Aug. 14, 2015 as the official release date for the long-awaited N.W.A. biopic.
The film, aptly-titled Straight Outta Compton, will be directed by F. Gary Gray — who stepped behind the lens for The Italian Job. On Wednesday, the studio unveiled a cast photo, featuring N.W.A. pioneers Dr. Dre and Ice Cube (DJ Yella and MC Ren were noticeably absent), Gray and the film’s three, relatively unknown, stars.
O’Shea Jackson Jr. will don his best jheri curl and (now) vintage Raiders cap to play Cube. And if that name sounds familiar, well, it should. O’Shea Jr. is Cube’s 23-year-old son.
Eric “Eazy-E” Wright will be portrayed by Jason Mitchell. The so-called “Godfather of Gangsta Rap” died of complications of AIDS in 1995. Wright’s widow, Tomica Wright, is listed as one of the film’s executive producers.
Dre had his heart set on having up-and-comer Michael B. Jordan as his on-screen alter ego. Due to scheduling conflicts, the role was eventually awarded to Corey Hawkins. More newcomer than up-and-comer, Hawkins was a kitchen worker in a Los Angeles resident before slaying a screen test to play the prolific producer.
