One year after a nearly career-ending debacle at the 2007 ceremony, Britney Spears gets hit the VMAs one more time. The Grammy-winning pop star will open the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night in Hollywood, the network confirmed Wednesday.
Don’t get too excited, Britney won’t be performing; instead MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler explained the Brit’s VMA return as something “fun and unexpected.”
“I think for Britney, people are rooting for her, and she’s really on the road to recovery,” Van noted.
“It feels like it’s her year,” he added. “It’s our 25th anniversary of the VMAs, and she’s been such a critical piece of MTV’s history.”
Britney couldn’t be happier about the opportunity to redeem herself.
“MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated,” Spears said in a statement.
Britney Spears is nominated for threeVMA moonman trophies, including Video of the Year for single “Piece of Me.”
