Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was injured in a one-vehicle crash near his rural Mississippi home at approximately 11:30 p.m Sunday night.

The accident happened after Freeman’s 1997 Nissan Maxima went off the shoulder of the road and flipped over, the Associated Press reports.

The screen legend, 71, had to be airlifted to a Memphis hospital for treatment. He is presently in serious condition with several broken ribs and an injured knee. A state trooper tells the AP there was a female passenger in the car with the actor.
