It’s a big week for scandals on the beauty pageant circuit: Miss Universe Australia finalist Stephanie Naumoska sparked controversy on Thursday when the rail-thin beauty queen was selected as one of 32 finalists to compete in Australia’s Miss Universe contest, a competition that supposedly encourages “healthy, proportioned, bodies.”

Stephanie, who is 5 ft. 11 in. tall and weighs 108 lbs, has a body mass index of just 15.1. Australian health professionals say the 19-year-old is malnourished.

“I think it is very unfair that I have been criticized that I’m too skinny. I have never been anorexic or bulimic I don’t throw up my meals after I eat them I don’t starve myself, none of that. I eat six to eight healthy meals a day,” Stephanie said in response the weight criticism on Thursday. “I have been modeling since I was 13 and have a lot of friends who are really tall and skinny. It is just the way that our bodies are.’’

I just think it’s a private thing and nobody can ever say she has an eating disorder or doesn’t because the point of the matter is she’s 19 and there are naturally skinny people in the world. If it were proven that Miss Australia were actually malnourished, then we would have to look at some serious ethical problems, but its just as bad to call someone naturally skinny “too skinny.” Plus, she was one of 32 finalists: that’s a pretty big selection.

i am disgusted at those who say that she looks “disgusting” or “painfully thin” or “she needs to eat a cheese burger” or “She reminds me of some of the pics of the holocost victims”. seriously why would you say such horrible things?!?! would you seriously say to someone walking down the street, “you are so ugly, why don’t you just fix your face! go get plastic surgery!”?!?!?!?! and even if she had an eating disorder, saying that she looks disgusting would be very triggering to her and would sink her deeper into the illness! if she had an eating dosorder it would be extremely difficult to come to terms that she is not ‘fat’ like she thinks she is. it would be terrifying to be told to gain weight! it does not appear that she has an eating disorder anyway

healthy doesn’t mean BMI between 18-25. BMI is just a formula used as a guide to show doctors what is healthy or not. you CAN be healthy overweight or underweight, depending on your diet and lifestyle. eating a cheese burger isn’t very healthy also, so i really don’t know why some stupid person suggested that!

STOP attacking the poor girl!!!! she is naturally slender and can’t help it. something that micheal kors said, “you can tell if a model has an eating disorder when her head looks too big for her body”. this girl has a very small and long face that fit her body just perfectly. maybe she can help it and try to put on weight(with lots of effort), but is fine with the way she looks and just doesn’t want the hassle or see the point in changing the way she looks just to please others. i know someone who has a very hard time tring to put on weight. she is on medication, etc. it is just the same when you attack someone for being overweight. bringing in plus sized models is the same………………you are teaching people that you have to be a certain weight to be beautiful. she is beautiful! she talks with such confidence and grace. she honestly looks too happy to have an ed. a lot of people with eds HATE eating in front of others and she was there eating in front of the camera!

and the fact that she said to the cameras “i don’t have an eating disorder, i don’t starve myself or throw up my food” clearly indicates that she herself doesn’t understand what eating disorders are or are about. making yourself throw up doesn’t mean that you are bulimic and starving yourself doesn’t mean that you have anorexia. those are behaviours that are commonly associated with eating disorders but those behaviours make up about 5% of the illness. there is a whole entire phychological side to the illness that most people don’t see—that is the battle. thats why it’s called ‘mental illness’.

ONLY A PSYCHIATRIC EXAMINATION COULD EVEN HALF DETERMINE THE PRESENCE OF AN EATING DISORDER!!!! SO YOU CANT JUST SAY THAT SHE HAS ANOREXIA FROM THE WAY THAT SHE LOOKS. GOD SOME OF YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME FURIOUS—-YOU HAVE NEVER SUFFERED FROM AN ED YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT EATING DISORDERS ARE!!!

i have an eating disorder and i’ll tell you now it has nothing to do with weight. it has everything to do with using food to deal with issues. just because you are ‘thin’ doesn’t mean you have anorexia. you can be overweight and suffer from the illness. she could have an eating disorder, yes, but she could also have cancer too, it is a possibility.

beating someone up for being the way they look and especially accusing someone of having a mental illness because they look ‘too thin’ is so SHALLOW!!! YOU PEOPLE DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ANOREXIA SO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!

    STOP STERIOTYPING PEOPLE!!!!

it’s actually quite interesting that most of people who voted ‘too thin’ were rather bitchy in their comments. my sister(20) said yesterday, “OMG YES she is too skinny! you can see her BONES STICKING OUT! she TOO help her weight!”. surely if you found out someone had anorexia, you would be concerned, worried and sympathetic, not commenting with a ’she is trying to make me look fat on purpose by not eating’ type of attitude. um……….GET EDUCATED!!!

I’ll say it. I think she looks horrible. I’m a bisexual female, and personally, I like a woman that has curves…not the body of an eleven year old.
Her bones are STICKING OUT, she looks pale, and she looks like she could use a burger, or five.
Miss UNIVERSE?! Come on people, I don’t mean to be harsh, but let’s be real.

I don’t agree with the malicious comments about her, but I think this is a perfect example of why someone like her should not be chosen for this or any other position that qualifies her as an exemplary woman. Even if she is healthy (which, with a BMI as low as hers is NOT healthy under any circumstances), she is in a position as a role model for women ACROSS THE WORLD. There are already too many girls and women who destroy their bodies because they think they need to look like that. I am naturally very thin (and that can be an INSECURITY for me), and I am 5′4″ and 114 lbs. If she is 5′11″ and 108lbs…that’s not healthy. She is a beautiful woman, but Miss Universe is not something meant to boost egos (though it does), it is there for these women to help others.

And to the long writer up there. I appreciate your effort, but you are just as bad as the others with your assumptions. She COULD very well have an eating disorder, and eating disorders definitely have to do with the food. That doesn’t mean they ALWAYS have to do with the food, but a lot of the time they are because a girl thinks she will look better if she doesn’t eat. You can’t say the cause of a psychiatric disorder is the same in every person. Also, there are many physical signs of anorexia, so sometimes you can tell by looking at them. If she had cancer, trust me, she would not be able to endure all of that competition. I do agree with you on one thing though…that the others are just MEAN and have absolutely no empathy. Those people are the reason modeling agencies demand women to be too skinny…because there are people like that out there saying “Not good enough.”

How did she make it as far as she has? The fact is that we glamorize women like her and Nicole Kidman. I told my husband, who loves NC, that if he wants me to have a child’s body like that then he is has “bad tendencies.”

She is super hot. Fat girls eat too much. She is cute and slender. Some dudes like big girls, many like them skinny. There is room for all sorts. But skinny girls rule.
    You go Stephanie!

Her body is awesome. She is stunning and feminine. The lightness of her thinness is something most men would definitely value on a physical level. Give me a skinny girl any day. They are so superior on all levels.

So, let’s look at who is so upset about thin girls

    Feminists

What is it about feminine beauty that Feminists find so objectionable? Here is a woman who proudly wants and does look like a woman, not a man. Femininity itself is what they fear and object to.

    Fat People

She makes fat people embarrassed. End of story.

    Anti- anorexia movement

Anti anorexia is hysteria, like anti Child Porn. Both are a big business for NGOs and activists. But let’s look at the facts. Go on line and try to find child porn. Let’s say, I give you one hour. Try to find some. You cannot. It does not exist except among private mail exchanges of people who already know each other. Now look at Anorexia. How many people die each year from anorexia? Five? Ten? One hundred? Now look at diabetes, heart disease and other diseases caused by obesity. How many die? HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS! This anti skinny model movement is just a business for these people.

    Corporations, consumerism, the status quo

Slim people who don’t over eat live longer than fat people, statistically. They waste less of the earth’s resources and they don’t spend as much money so they save more. This is a huge threat to corporations that want us to consume, spend and over indulge for their own profit. That’s why major corporate media is so behind this anti slim people hysteria.

Bottom line. Skinny girls are the perfect form and I love em. They are smart enough not to over eat and true to themselves. That makes them better choices for men.

    Get used to it!

Steven its people like you who give men a bad name. Its no wonder girls try their best to stay skinny just so a guy can notice them. I am a female, 188cm and 24 yrs old. I was overweight in high school and bullied but never did i have anyone stand up for me the way you stand up for Stephanie. So tell me then what makes her so special? After i graduated from high school i lost the weight and was complimented by people who would never even talk to me in high school.

It feels like to me that those who do accept her weight just because she is a model seem really shallow. When a skinny woman is being judged people will come to her defence and say your just jealous. I never hear a person sticking up for fat people saying your just jealous. Your a hypocrite steven. Get a life

OK, here’s the deal–yes, she’s very pretty., but she is too thin.Even if she’s naturally that skinny, she would look better if she gained more weight. Also, it is alarming to have her as the stereotype of ‘beauty’ when she’s that skinny, becuase, lets face it, very few people are. I mean, I consider myself thin at 5′7” and 120lbs. I go to school at a junior college, and a LOT of girls are annorexic there–it’s just what you do to be ‘beautiful’. But even the annorexic girls aren’ t THAT skinny–I would hate to see the effect that nominating Stephanie as Miss Universe might have on girls like this. Bottom line–(cheesy as it may sound) you’re only beautiful when you’re healthy–and stephanie’s just not healthy.

People are so cruel. I think she looks amazing. Why do we criticize a thin girl when most Americans and Aussies are medically obese? Thin is beautiful. If she chooses to eat or not eat, that’s HER choice. She looks healthy and amazingly beautiful, and it is nice to see someone who cares about how her body looks. Most of you who make derogatory comments about her have made at least two trips to the McDonald’s this week to hit up the ninety-nine cent menu, so spare us the hypocritical rhetoric because she is something you are not…thin and beautiful.

geez leave her alone. this is her life and i think shes actually very pretty. i don’t get why people have to get involved with her private life. how would you like it if you walked onto the street and people came up to you and told you how to live your life.
there isnothing wrong with her so stop with these stupid accusations and destructive critism. just because shes a modelling-contestant it doesn’t mean she doesn’t have feelings.
