Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton may have been crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday night, but it’s Miss California Carrie Prejean’s answer to a question about same-sex marriage from celebrity blogger and pageant judge Perez Hilton that is creating some major controversy.

During the show, Perez asked Carrie, “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”

“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Carrie, 21, stumbled as she replied. “No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think that it should be between a man and a woman.”

Well Perez didn’t take too kindly to that remark. The acid-tongued pundit later called the beauty queen a “dumb bitch” during an after pageant vlog on his popular PerezHilton.com website.

And the flamboyant queen isn’t the only one speaking out against Carrie’s controversial response to the question. An executive director of the Miss California USA pageant say they are “saddened” by the statesque’s blonde’s remarks.

“As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman,” Keith Lewis, Co-Executive Director of Miss California USA/Teen USA said in a statement released to PerezHilton.com. “Although I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.”

“It did cost me my crown,” Carrie said of her response on Monday’s Billy Bush Show. “I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do.”

“It is a very touchy subject and [Hilton] is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct,” she added. “But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.”

I am proud to have her representing the state I live in. She did not give up the values and beliefs she was raised up with for the title. She made her family and the state of California proud.
Congratulation, you are a winner in our eyes.
    P.S. You are beautiful too.

Even though i think gays should be able to get married it is clear that she didnt lose because she’s an idiot, she lost because she’s an idiot who gave the wrong answer. Had she been an idiot who supported gay marriage she would not be getting all these attacks. It’s the usual thing with the left and the right – one standard for “us”, another standard for “them”.

No Charley, she did not lose because she supported gay marriage. She lost because she stumbled over the question and did not display a sense of awareness about issues that a Miss USA winner should have some grasp on. From the Miss USA site:

“These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who see to improve the lives of others.”

Savvy, goal-oriented and *aware*. Miss California showed the world that she was definitely not two out of the three (e.g. savvy or aware). That is why she lost. And rightfully so…any competitor can insert their own opinion, but if they do it gracelessly and in a clumsy way, they don’t get the crown.
