Mischa Barton Describes “Full-On Breakdown”
Mischa Barton is breaking her silence on the “full-on breakdown” that lead to her abrupt from the pop culture spotlight.
The money and adulation that came from starring on a hit TV series came with a high price for Barton. The breakout star of the defunct FOX hit The O.C. reveals that Hollywood stardom led her down a party-all-the-time path that ended with a stay in the psych ward.
In a new interview with People magazine, Mischa admits that years of stress, overwork and too much partying left her a physical and emotional wreck, with low points including her 2008 DUI arrest. Mischa, now 27, describes how her life “spiraled out of control” after she was cast as Marissa Cooper at age 16. She now says fame and fortune went to her head as she became sucked into an endless cycle of partying every night with the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie.
“It was a train I could not get off of…after awhile it’s going to come crashing down on you.”
By 2009, the situation had gotten so out of control that Mischa’s worried parents decided to stage an intervention. When Mischa responded by threatening suicide, her folks had her committed to a California psych ward.
At the time, the hospitalization was “officially” blamed on Mischa’s recent wisdom tooth surgery. But the British-born star now admits that wasn’t the case.
Barton says of her four day ordeal:
“It was a recipe for disaster. It was a full-on breakdown. It was terrifying. Straight out of Girl, Interrupted. Story of my life.”
Mischa also reveals her lifelong struggles with body image, describing how the constant criticism of her svelte physique suddenly went the other way when she experienced a noticeable weight gain.
“It was always, ‘She’s too skinny, she must be sick.’ Then it was, ‘She’s too big.’ I was never the right weight.”
Today, Mischa finds herself in a much better place: content, healthy and “happily single.”
“I’ve learned a lot. I’m stronger now and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Mischa’s interview appears in the Oct. 28 issue of People, on newsstands Friday.
