Mindy McCready Suicide: Singer Shoots Dog, Then Self
Mindy McCready is dead.
The troubled singer died Sunday after an apparent suicide at her home in Heber Springs, Arkansas. She was 37. A source told E! News:
“She shot herself and the dog.”
According to a police report from the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of gun shots fired at the star’s home earlier Sunday afternoon. Upon arriving, officers reportedly found McCready’s body on the front porch and pronounced her dead at the scene from what appeared to be “a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.” McCready had attempted suicide before, having been hospitalized in 2008 after she cut her wrists and overdosed on prescription drugs.
McCready was 18 when she found fame in the mid-1990s. Her first album, Ten Thousand Angels, featuring the single “Guys Do It All the Time,” sold two million copies.
In recent years, the Celebrity Rehab alum has struggled with drug addiction, a host of suicide attempts and the fallout of her longtime affair with shamed slugger Roger Clemens.
McCready also has an older son Zander with singer Billy McKnight. The child was in the custody of Mindy’s mother, Gayle Inge, from 2007 to 2011.
That’s the same year the singer narrowly escaped kidnapping charges when she took Zander from his father’s Florida home and fled to Arkansas without permission of the court. She claimed her son was the victim of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his grandmother.

McCready’s death succeeds the suspicious shooting death of her live-in boyfriend. Earlier this month, McCready spoke to NBC’s Andrea Canning about David Wilson, 34 — the father of her nine-month-old son Zayne — who died of a gunshot wound on Jan. 13. Wilson, a record producer, was initially rushed to the hospital with a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died a short time later.
In an interview conducted at her home near Little Rock, McCready recalled how she discovered him after the shooting.
“I have never gone through anything this painful. He didn’t just touch my heart, he touched my soul. He was my soulmate. I just started screaming, calling 911. I laid down next to him and just pleaded with him not to die.”
Just last week, McCready’s young sons were placed in foster care after a judge ordered the singer to undergo treatment for mental illness and addiction issues. Family insiders say she had begun drinking and using drugs again, refused to bathe and wasn’t caring for her children properly.
