Michael Sam Delivers Emotional ESPYs Speech
The 2014 ESPY Awards brought lots of laughs — courtesy of host Drake — but its football star Michael Sam who’s appearance is being hailed most memorable. Sam became the NFL’s first openly gay player when he was drafted as a defensive end for the Saint Louis Rams in May.
The 24-year-old athlete delivered an emotional speech on the year of obstacles that threatened his path to professional football as he accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at last night’s ceremony. Sam was accompanied to the event by his college sweetheart, Vito Cammisano.
